WV High School Seniors:
The Disability History Contest Committee is proud to announce the 2014 Disability History Essay Contest in WV. This contest is designed to provide you an opportunity to showcase your writing skills, share what you have learned about the Disability Rights Movement, use your ability to form and express opinions, and perhaps to earn some money to help you into your future.

This contest is a collaborative effort of the WV Division of Rehabiolitation Services, the Statewide Independent Living Council and the State Rehabilitation Council, with cooperation from the WV Dept of Education and the WV Department of Education and the Arts.

All high school seniors are invited to submit an essay. Contest rules are located at the bottom of the entry form (copies in my office). All entries must include the completed entry form and must comply with contest rules. The essay topic is:
"Discuss the opportunities for people with disabilities that have evolved from the Disability Rights Movement."

The top award will be presented to the state winner, and awards may be presented to first-place and second-place entries from six-Districts of our state. The awards are as follows:

Funding for all awards is provided through a grant from the WV Division of Rehabilitation Services.

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Scholarship Application is available online ONLY. The application will be available on the GKVFS website on November 1. You can click on Scholarships and obtain the following:

Just four weeks remain for youth volunteers to apply for national recognition through the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

This program is an excellent opportunity to shine a spotlight on students who have distinguished themselves through community service, and celebrate the spirit of volunteerism throughout the student body. We hope you'll encourage your youth volunteers to apply.

2015 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are open to students in grades 5-12 who have participated in a volunteer activity within the past year. Honors are granted at the local, state and national level. Top honorees earn cash prizes and all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. for four days of special recognition events.

Here's how students can apply:

PROMISE Scholarship - West Virginia PROMISE (Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-State Student Excellence) is a merit-based scholarship program designed to make college affordable to all qualified West Virginia students.  The program provides West Virginia high school graduates meeting certain requirements, a full tuition scholarship to a state college or university in West Virginia or an equivalent amount to an in-state private college. Click here for more information.

ACT'S Financial Aid Need Estimator!

This free service can help you plan more effectively to meet college costs. The Financial Aid Need Estimator allows you to calculate both your family contribution and costs at specific institutions by taking you through two steps.


This year more than 320 individuals are serving in West Virginia communities as AmeriCorps members. In return, AmeriCorps members receive an education award of up to $4,725 to help pay for college or pay back student loans. To date, more than 3,100 West Virginia residents have qualified for education awards totaling more than $7,000,000. Two-thirds of AmeriCorps grants are made by the West Virginia Commission for National and Community Service. National nonprofits make other assignments. College Net Scholarship/Financial Aid Search
The Mach25 database contains over 600,000 awards totaling over $1.6 billion. Keyword Search gives you a quick way to narrow down to a particular scholarship or group of scholarships. CollegeNET sponsors an essay competition during the winter of each year. Entries are limited to individuals who both (1) apply to college via a CollegeNET-hosted web admissions application; and (2) are nominated by the institution at which they enroll. The grand prize winner is awarded $10,000.
 This website offers pre-college students a resource to search for offered scholarships (athletic, minority, by state, etc.) in addition to essay-writing tips, money-saving tips, and grants and student loan information. Click here for more information. West Virginia-Specific Scholarships has a massive scholarship database and search bar with incredible matching technology. Horatio Alger Scholarship John and Mildred Peluso Scholarship: $1000 scholarship for student of Italian descent attending WVU.

Mark Ware Construction Education Scholarship: 
Construction-related fields or professions including, but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, painting, carpentry, architecture, or construction management.· The recipient of this scholarship will be awarded $1,000. McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship - The McKelvey foundation has 100 scholarships that are worth $40,000 each for high school seniors that own their own business. Last year (2008) they were able to give out only 52. MU Multicultural Affairs Scholarships and Fellowships - Click here for more information. $4.5 Million Available in Co-op Scholarships:  The National Commission for Cooperative Education, dedicated to the advancement of high-quality, college-level, cooperative education announces its eighth annual national co-op scholarship program. The program, for high school seniors and community college transfer students, will award 100 $6,000 merit co-op scholarships, most of which are renewable for up to $20,000-$25,000. Student Athlete Awards Program:  The National Milk Mustache "got milk?" Campaign, in partnership with USA TODAY, announces the 13th annual Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award Program, which recognizes 25 outstanding high school senior student athletes. Winners receive a $7,500 college scholarship, attend an awards ceremony in June 2010 and have an opportunity to be pictured in a special Milk Mustache ad. SAT'S Loan Search Program
SST'S loan program is the only national program designed, developed, and managed by educators. Choose from a full range of low-interest loans. This site helps students understand and apply for various loans available to pay for college.

An online tool to help you locate scholarships, internships, grants, and loans that match your education level, talents, and background. Complete the brief questionnaire and Scholarship Search will find potential opportunities from our database of more than 2,300 sources of college funding, totaling nearly $3 BILLION in available aid! You can look for scholarships based on a major. The good thing is, too, that you don't have to sign up or register to just look. You can go to the bottom of the home screen and click on "scholarships by major". I know there is a $10,000 create a greeting card scholarship.....this is just an example.

Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Scholarship Program
 -TGKVF offers many and various ways for you to acquire a post-secondary education. Some scholarships are designated for graduating seniors of certain schools. Others are awarded for specific fields such as nursing or law. Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship Program
The Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship Program is a state-funded student aid program designed to enable and encourage students to pursue teaching careers at the pre-school, elementary, middle, or secondary school level. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships, not to exceed $5,000 per academic year, are awarded on the basis of academic qualifications and interest in teaching. West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships - West Virginia is pioneering new approaches to educating medical and other health professions students in rural settings through the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships. The goal of these community-based training programs is to increase the number of primary care providers in rural West Virginia.To further these efforts, the state is targeting financial incentives and support to primary care and rural practice. Jack Kent Cook Scholarship. It's a really amazing opportunity for high-achieving low-income students. The foundation provides up to $40,000 per year to help students cover the cost of tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and living expenses to attend an elite college or university, and provides students with dedicated leadership training, counseling and support to help them adjust to their new environment and be successful. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation seeks high-achieving high school seniors with financial need for its College Scholarship Program, the largest undergraduate scholarship in the nation. Selected students receive college planning support, ongoing advising, and up to $40,000 per year to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate institution. WVU will begin using superscored ACT scores for admissions decisions and Undergraduate Scholarship Office scholarships (this means you can combine your highest scores from multiple tests: for example, if you scored an 18 in math in October but had  32 in English and took the test again in December and scored a 25 in math and 19 in English; you could use the 32 in English and the 25 in math)

In fall 2015, WVU intends to join the Common Application. As a part of this process, additional components will be required, including an essay and a letter of recommendation. In preparation for this change our Admissions Counselors will no longer be able to offer on the spot application evaluations and decisions during our school visits.

Every student who visits campus will receive an application fee waiver code valid for 30 days after their visit. Seniors who visited prior to fall 2014 have already been contacted by mail with their code. Learn more at

PROMISE Scholarship The PROMISE Scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia residents. Students who achieve certain academic goals are eligible to receive funds to help pay for college. Eligible high school graduates will receive annual awards up to $4,750 to cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at public or independent institutions in West Virginia. PROMISE Scholarship Eligibility Requirements Timeline for the Class of 2015 NOVEMBER 1, 2014 The PROMISE Application is open. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2015.   • Students must complete the PROMISE Scholarship Application (Application for State-Level Financial Aid Programs) by this date. Students may use their eighth semester (typically the spring semester of their senior year) grades to achieve PROMISE eligibility (3.0 GPA in thecore classes and overall), but must apply by March 1st.
  • In order to be considered for the PROMISE Scholarship, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be received by the Federal Student Aid Processing Center on or before March 1, 2015, and meet the conditions for processing.

APRIL 2015 Initial award letters are mailed to PROMISE Scholars. JUNE 6, 2015: SAT Last date to take the SAT to establish scholarship eligibility (reasoning test only). Scores will not be accepted for any SAT taken after June 6, 2015. JUNE 13, 2015: ACT Last date to take the ACT (national test only) to establish scholarship eligibility. Scores will not be accepted for any ACT taken after June 13, 2015. PROMISE Scholarship Renewal Requirements Summer PROMISE Scholarship Awards Community Service for PROMISE Scholarship Applicants Applicants for PROMISE Scholarship awards are strongly urged to perform at least 20 hours of unpaid community service while in high school and college.
